Donizetta A. Hewett, Frederick Webb Hodge?, and Kenneth Chapman at excavation camp, El Rito de los Frijoles, New Mexico

Bandelier National Monument was designated as a national monument February 11, 1916. Prior to 1916, Edgar L. Hewett, and others, referred to this area using many different names, including El Rito de los Frijoles, Frijoles Canyon, Pajarito Plateau, Pajarito Park, Pajarito Forest, and potentially others.

A majority of the photographs in this set were taken during the 1910 summer field school at El Rito de los Frijoles, New Mexico. Two of the photographs include Donizetta Jones Wood. Donizetta and Edgar were married in 1911. There is evidence that Donizetta may have been visiting the field school camps as early as 1909 (see negative number 139439), though those two photographs, and perhaps others in this set, may have been taken between 1909 and 1916.
