Correspondence with representatives of the United States federal government, including from the Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Affairs (now the Bureau of Indian Affairs), General Land Office, Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Postal Service, and Department of the Treasury. Topics include: the Antiquities Act of 1906; permits for archaeological work in the Southwest; Mesa Verde National Park; administration and management of New Mexico's national monuments and national forests, such as Bandelier National Monument; the proposed Pajarito National Park; Pueblo Indian rights and land; Native American policy; the federal building in Santa Fe; archaeological sites like Gran Quivira and Chaco Canyon; and World War I. Includes correspondence with H. M. Randolph, Francis E. Leupp, Barbara Freire-Marreco, Lucy E. Peabody, Paul A. F. Walter, William Boone Douglass, Benigno Cárdenas Hernández, B. H. Gibbs, Andrieus Aristieus Jones, Lansing B. Bloom, Ralph Emerson Twitchell, Hubert Work, William Jennings Bryan, and others. Also includes archaeological permits for excavations at the following locations: in the Rito de los Frijoles canyon and adjacent areas in the Jemez National Forest, from 1907-1909; at the ancient pueblo ruins on the Santa Clara Indian Reservation in 1907 and 1909; on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona in 1909; in Southern Utah and Southern Colorado in 1909; in the San Juan Valley in Utah and Arizona from 1910-1911; and on the Colorado-New Mexico state line on the Navajo Springs and San Juan Indian Reservations from 1912-1913.
